Artificial Intelligence is increasingly recognized as a foundational technology in education—not only transforming how we teach, but redefining how learning itself is understood and designed. The ETCOP Institute for Interdisciplinary Research was pleased to contribute to a recent high-level dialogue on “Artificial Intelligence as a foundational technology in secondary education”, bringing together stakeholders from education, research, and practice.
A Milestone for AI in Education
A central highlight of the event was the official announcement of the scientific collaboration between HAK 1 Klagenfurt and the University of Klagenfurt, supporting the development of the KI-HAK initiative.
The cooperation on behalf of HAK 1 Klagenfurt is led by Dr. Birgit Oberer, ensuring a strong alignment between educational practice, research-based innovation, and strategic development.
This collaboration represents an important step toward:
- embedding AI as a core competence in secondary education
- strengthening the connection between research and classroom practice
- fostering innovation through interdisciplinary cooperation
Beyond Tools: A Responsible Approach to AI
The discussion clearly highlighted that:
AI in education is not just about tools.
It is about:
- responsibility
- critical thinking
- sustainable and ethical integration
As AI becomes more embedded in learning environments, educational institutions must actively shape its use—ensuring that human agency, reflection, and competence development remain at the center.
The Role of Partnerships
Strong partnerships between schools, universities, and research institutions are essential for meaningful and sustainable innovation. ETCOP is committed to:
- supporting evidence-based educational development
- advancing responsible AI integration
- fostering dialogue between policy, research, and practice
Looking Ahead
Initiatives such as KI-HAK demonstrate how strategic leadership and collaboration can translate emerging technologies into concrete educational innovation. By aligning technological advancement with pedagogical responsibility, we can ensure that AI strengthens—not replaces—core educational values.
